Shortly after graduating from Shawnee Mission West in 1995, Brent applied to the local #2 Sheet Metal Workers Union apprenticeship program. As an apprentice, he worked in the field as an installer and in the shop as a fabricator and later worked as an estimator, superintendent and project manager.  While working as a project manager at his family’s business, J&L Sheet Metal, he witnessed a worker fall off the edge of a roof causing permanent damage and leaving him unable to work. This really changed Brent and his approach to safety on the jobsite. Moving forward, he decided that it would be best to tie off workers 100% of the time. This came with many obstacles including roofs with no tie-off anchors and additional safety hazards caused by lifelines. Brent and his team began to brainstorm and came up with the idea to create a mobile anchor point that would not only provide a place to tie off but also a way that workers could continue to be efficient.  AES Raptor was born as demand for these ingenious units increased.

In 2010, Mike Budenbender with Premeir Rail Systems approached Brent to manufacture his permament railing system. AES Raptor was already using a lot of the same materials and processes in their manufacturing so it was a good fit. In 2014, it was decided that it was best to combine the two companies, therefore Leading Edge Safety was formed on January 1, 2015.
